ATLAS – The humanoid robot
ATLAS is a powerful robot in the form of an adult human. It moves with a variety of lifelike and natural behavior, including dynamically-balanced walking, calisthenics, manipulation and user-programmed tasks. It is based on Boston Dynamics’ earlier PETMAN humanoid robot;. Atlas looks similar to what we have seen robots in “transformers” movie series; it can walk bipedally and the articulated, sensate hands will enable Atlas to use tools designed for humans. Atlas is electrically powered and contains 28 hydraulically-actuated degrees of freedom. two hands, arms, legs, feet and a torso (the trunk of the human body) and is 175 Cm tall and weighs 81Kg as compared to its previous version which was 150Kg. The sensor head includes stereo camera and a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The company said the robot uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and has other sensors in its head to avoid obstacles and navigate. The robot’s intelligence requires guides, such as the QR codes (Quick Response Codes) but its physical capabilities are nothing short of astonishing.
This humanoid robot is designed mainly for search and rescue tasks and is currently going through additional modifications which will enable its use in other applications. The latest one is Atlas walking and picking up boxes which is a good sign for manufacturing industries. In the near future “ATLAS” can help the semiconductor industryin processes such as inventory management, extraction of precious metals from e-waste, but it might also mark the end of manual labor. Currently the clean room robots are doing a good job in optimizing the production process, but there`s always some room for evolution and development and we might see robots like Atlas being used in the clean rooms in near future. Industry 4.0 which is the current buzz in the market might also add some finishing touch to this masterpiece.
